Marcus Williams was named a 2019 Richard Lidinsky, Sr. Award for Excellence in Public Service Honorable Mention. The award is named for Mr. Richard Lidinsky, who set the standard for excellence in public service through lives impacted, dollars saved, processes improved, and above all else, the spirit in which he served the city.

Marcus started off working for a building maintenance company that performed custodial tasks and light maintenance in city buildings. It didn’t take long to recognize his talents and his work ethic. Soon thereafter be was brought on board with the city as a laborer. Throughout his career he has diligently worked to be promoted. From laborer to building repairer and then onto his current role as a public building maintenance coordinator (PBMC).

His achievement of becoming a PBMC would not have been possible without Marcus having taken the brave step of tackling adult literacy challenges. He saw that his personal limitations with reading comprehension were limiting his professional capacity. Over two years he has worked to improve his literacy skills, by working with tutors after work. He regularly travels long distances across the city from home to work, then from work to the tutor, then home again late in the evening, sometimes by bicycle.

His public service is generally based around helping people his neighborhood, the challenging area of Sandtown/Winchester. Along with helping neighbors he also works on their local police district: the Western District.
