Baltimore City Building Wins Green Building Award

On February 20th, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Housing & Resource Center won a Wintergreen Award for Excellence in Green Building from the U.S. Green Building Council Maryland Chapter (USGBC Maryland). The Wintergreen Award celebrates, promotes and recognizes excellence in high performance, healthy design and building; environmental stewardship and community impact; and serves to highlight the green building initiatives and achievements of the USGBC Maryland region projects, businesses, chapter members and other vested individuals.
Formerly a historic train depot, the 19th century building at 620 Fallsway was revived to serve a new purpose as a crisis intervention center operated funded by the Mayor’s Office of Human Services. The Design & Construction/Major Projects Division of DGS embarked on a major renovation project in September of 2009 with the goal of not only adapting the building to its new mission but to reduce its carbon footprint. Renovations included the installation of energy efficient heating, air conditioning and water systems, the use of recycled building materials and the installation of a green roof containing 31 different plants.
On August 27, 2013, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Housing & Resource Center received LEED Silver certification, becoming the first building owned by Baltimore City to achieve that status.
DGS is thrilled to be recognized by USGBC Maryland and remains committed to help reduce pollution and save money for the citizens of Baltimore.
