BALTIMORE, MARYLAND September 15, 2015 – Twenty members of the Baltimore City Department of General Services (DGS) participated in the National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11, 2015 by volunteering with Business Volunteers Maryland at the Baltimore Community ToolBank in honor of those lost on September 11, 2001.

“Beyond maintaining the City’s properties, or managing the fleet, many DGS employees give back to our community,” said DGS Director Steve Sharkey in an email to staff. “It was an amazing day to have DGS employees coming together to serve the greater Baltimore community. It is a pleasure to serve in an organization that can give back to the community in so many ways.”

The DGS staff joined about thirty other volunteers as they sanded and sealed the exterior wood around the Baltimore Community ToolBank rain gardens, mulched flower beds, cleaned the interior to prepare for an influx of fall projects, and painted interior and exterior property.

The National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11th is the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the United States. Each year more than 40 million Americans and many others in 150 countries observe September 11 by performing good deeds that help others to remember and pay tribute to the victims, and honor those that rose in service. In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law.
